Radiant Heat & Hardwood: Can They Coexist in Canada’s Cold Climate?

There is nothing quite like the feeling of a heated floor during a Calgary blizzard or an Ottawa ice storm. However, combining radiant heat with hardwood is a technical challenge that requires specific precautions. Because the heat source is directly beneath the wood, it can dry out the fibers much faster than a traditional baseboard or forced-air system.

At GC Flooring, we’ve been the one-stop shop for high-performance flooring since 1995. We only sell products we can stand behind, and for radiant heat projects, that means guiding you toward the most stable options available.

Critical Guidelines for Radiant Heat

If you are planning a heated floor, the NWFA and our experts recommend following these strict parameters:

Product Selection

Engineered wood is strongly recommended over solid wood for radiant heat due to its superior dimensional stability. Additionally, choosing narrower plank widths can help minimize the visual appearance of any minor gaps that may occur.

Temperature Limits

Never allow the surface temperature of the wood to exceed 26.7°C (80°F). Overheating the wood will lead to end-checking and potential delamination of the finish.

The “Step-Up” Method

When turning your heat on for the season, do so in small increments of 1–2°C per day. This allows the wood to slowly acclimate to the rising temperature.
