What Exactly is a Wear Layer?

Luxury Vinyl Plank is a multi-layered product. While the bottom layers provide stability and the “print film” provides the visual beauty, the wear layer is the clear, topmost coating applied over the pattern.

Think of it as the “sacrificial” layer. Its entire job is to take the hit from scratching, scuffing, and staining so that the beautiful wood or stone image underneath remains untouched. The Difference Between “Mil” and “Millimeters”

One of the most common points of confusion for newcomers in the flooring industry is the difference between a mil and a millimeter (mm).

• Millimeters (mm): This usually refers to the total thickness of the entire plank.
• Mils: This refers specifically to the thickness of the wear layer.

1 mil is equal to 1/1000th of an inch. For perspective, a human hair is about 3 to 4 mils thick. While it sounds tiny, a few extra mils make a massive difference in how long your floor will last.

Generally, the thicker the wear layer, the longer the warranty. Most entry-level LVP products have a 6 mil or 12 mil layer, whereas premium products like Shaw COREtec or Mohawk Floorte often feature 20 mil or even 30 mil layers.

Commercial Spaces (20–30 mil): For restaurants, retail stores, or dental offices in urban centers like Ottawa or Vancouver, a 20 or 30 mil layer is essential to handle heavy foot traffic and frequent cleaning.
